Meet Tammy
Why did you choose to join the Race to End Duchenne team?
It was the best way to combine fundraising for a good cause while also increasing and monitoring my physical activity.
How many races have you participated in?
Our son was just diagnosed in the summer of 2022, so my first event was last year’s Global Walk to End Duchenne. I’ve started my team for the 79 Mile Challenge. I have run in a few 5K races in the past and have always viewed myself as an athlete. I have tracked my physical activity and steps since 2012.
How do you prepare for races?
I have always tried to keep my physical activity consistent leading up to any game or race. It’s important to “train” – even if that’s just making sure to reach your step goal in a day or getting in some kind of movement each day.
Do you have any fundraising and/or training tips or pointers you would share with other runners – either advice someone gave you or you’ve discovered on your own?
I would say that in order to fundraise, you have to make it personal. You have to give people perspective about how this is affecting your family. Also, you have to have hope. Asking for funds for life-saving research that could literally change the outlook for people diagnosed with this condition is very inspirational and motivating.
What will be the first thing you do when you finish your next race?
I’ll find another one!
