The Race to End Duchenne heads to Walt Disney World Resort® in two weeks for the runDisney Springtime Surprise Weekend. Sarah Khan is tackling the Challenge – meaning she’ll run the 5K, 10K, and 10-Miler in three days!
Why did you choose to join the Race to End Duchenne team?
I chose to run with the Race to End Duchenne team because my son Zakir Khan, 10 years old, has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and I believe that PPMD is making great progress towards finding a cure for this brutal disease. I also enjoy the sense of community and PPMD’s desire to raise awareness and advocate for funding and early testing.
How many races have you participated in?
Three so far! I ran my first race in 2017 and since then I have completed three races. I’m looking forward to my fourth challenge in April.
How do you prepare for races?
As a single mom working from home, I do the best I can! I focus on completing the races without getting injured or swept and so far, it has worked. I make sure that I run/walk a minimum of 4 to 5 miles a day, and I sneak in a treadmill work out when the kids are preoccupied. When I get closer to the race, I train following the Gallow run/walk/run app.
Do you have any fundraising and/or training tips or pointers you would share with other runners – either advice someone gave you or you’ve discovered on your own?
The best advice is don’t be afraid to ask for “sponsorship” in the form of a donation, directly. A lot of people will say “oh good for you, that’s cute, you’re running now? Who is chasing you?” unless you specifically ask them to make a donation. Additionally, you have to show them that there is hope for a treatment, so that they feel a donation is money worth spending.
What will be the first thing you do when you finish your next race?
Grab all the carbs I can find and sit on the floor! Then, take a nap!
