This year, Sarah James ran the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon as part of the Race to End Duchenne team.
Why did you choose to join the Race to End Duchenne team?
My cousin passed of this disease and there are two boys in my son’s school who have been diagnosed with Duchenne. I am honored to raise funds and awareness for those diagnosed with Duchenne.
How many races have you participated in?
I have lost count of my races. I had done multiple NYRR races including the first NYC Half Marathon and the 2011 NYC Marathon.
How do you prepare for races?
Consistency is the key! I have found training with friends helps me ensure that I show up every week. I recently got a Peloton and have found that to be a great alternative during these cold months.
Do you have any fundraising and/or training tips or pointers you would share with other runners – either advice someone gave you or you’ve discovered on your own?
You can do it!!! When we started our fundraising efforts for Team Ridgefield one of my friends asked do you think we can raise $2,000? I told her definitely, as I had run with Team in Training in the past. I would tell new fundraisers to post on social media and email your friends and family, you will be surprised at the support that you get. If you have a personal reason for fundraising do not be afraid to share it.
What will be the first thing you do when you finish your next race?
I will take a deep breath, throw my arms in the air in celebration and take a moment for gratitude as I cross the finish line. I am blessed with good health and amazing family & friends.
