Heart problems are a major cause of death in people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), but advanced treatments like heart pumps (called ventricular assist devices) and heart transplants have rarely been offered to them. In September 2024, PPMD brough together doctors and patient advocates to change this by creating a step-by-step guide for when and how people with DMD should be considered for these life-extending heart treatments. The group agreed that these advanced options should be available to eligible patients and worked together to develop care plans, which were finished and shared publicly about a year later.
