In June 2025, Governor Hobbs of Arizona State signed a bipartisan state budget that included the Duchenne newborn screening bill. Arizona committed to starting newborn screening for Duchenne for all babies in the state by October 1, 2027. Approximately 78,000 babies are born in Arizona every year, which means that we expect this program to identify at least seven babies with Duchenne annually once implemented.
This state is RUSP aligned: Arizona has a law that requires the state newborn screening program to include all conditions on the federal Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP). Duchenne is on the RUSP, and Arizona’s law requires that all newborns are screened for Duchenne by December 16, 2027. The law signed in 2025 to add Duchenne by October of 2027 overrides the deadline set by the RUSP alignment law.
