We are proud to share some important news for our community: Arizona has officially joined the growing list of states requiring newborn screening for Duchenne!
Thanks to the tireless efforts of passionate advocates, dedicated families, and strong support from our community, the Duchenne newborn screening bill was included in Arizona’s state budget. On Friday, June 27th, Governor Katie Hobbs signed the budget into law, marking a significant step forward for early detection and intervention.
Arizona is now required to begin statewide newborn screening for Duchenne by October 1, 2027. This will help ensure that babies born in Arizona have the earliest possible chance for diagnosis, care, and access to emerging therapies.
This achievement was only possible because of all of you—families who shared your stories, advocates who raised your voices, and supporters who never gave up. Together, we are driving progress in Duchenne, state by state.
Early diagnosis through newborn screening gives families precious time to plan, connect to care, and consider therapeutic options. It also helps researchers and clinicians understand the true impact of Duchenne and accelerates the development of therapies.
To everyone who contributed to this effort, thank you for your incredible work and commitment to making life better for every family affected by Duchenne.
