Jake-March2013

The Brookhaven Family Fun Run is being held in honor of thirteen-year-old Brookhaven resident Jake Pritchard, who is battling Duchenne muscular dystrophy (Duchenne).

Duchenne is the most common genetic muscle disease in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (about 20,000 new cases each year). Because the Duchenne gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects boys; however, it occurs across all races and cultures.

Duchenne can be passed from parent to child, but approximately 35% of cases occur because of a random spontaneous mutation. In other words, it can affect anyone. Although there are medical treatments that may help slow its progression, there is currently no cure for Duchenne.

Founded by parents of children with Duchenne, Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD) is an internationally recognized leader in advocating muscular dystrophy research. (tax ID: 31-1405490) For more information, visit www.parentprojectmd.org. Scientists are closer than ever to developing an effective treatment for this devastating disorder.  And, every dollar - no matter how large or small - makes a difference in the fight to find a cure!
