MassGeneral Hospital for Children and
Brian S. Tseng, MD, PhD.

Pediatric Neuromuscular Service

MassGeneral Hospital for Children established a new pediatric neuromuscular clinic and laboratory in January 2008, both headed by Brian S. Tseng, MD, PhD.

The clinic’s focus is on helping to improve and prolong the quality of life of patients currently living with pediatric neuromuscular diseases who traditionally have significant, fragmented and unmet medical needs.  Although these disorders may be genetic in nature, there is MUCH to be done that SHOULD be done.   We do not subscribe to the old-school of thought that,  “there is nothing to be done…”

Dr. Tseng and his teams are involved in both clinical and scientific research to this end. Global efforts are looking to improve long-term care and outlook for these amazing children with their extra challenges. Efforts to slow down these disorders, in turn, will increase the opportunities that these kids can take best advantage of curative therapies when they become available.

Care for the Living: Clinical Research Improves
Quality of Life

Affected children and their families come to the MassGeneral Hospital for Children’s pediatric neuromuscular clinic on Tuesdays. There, neuromuscular specialists, as well as a host of physicians in other disciplines, anticipate and care for patient needs in collaboration with the family and primary care doctor (PCP). Team members include pediatric cardiologists, pediatric endocrinologists, pediatric pulmonologists, physiatrists, orthopedists, dieticians, social work, family liasons/support and more. At MGH, we are also cross-pollinating in-house with our adult specialists such as cardiology, pulmonary and neurology to expand transitioning most fragile care.  It is our vision that children in this clinic are supposed to grow up to be adults and they deserve dedicated, compassionate and experienced adult docs to maximize best outcomes.   Despite documentation of the extent to which neuromuscular disorders affect the body as a whole and the whole family, this interdisciplinary and transitional broader approach to care is surprisingly uncommon.
