INSPIRATION RUNS BOTH WAYS Any runner can tell you that distance running is a challenge, both physically and mentally. Lance Armstrong, who recently completed the 2006 NYC/ING Marathon (his first ever), called it “the hardest physical thing I’ve ever done”. Coming from the seven-time winner of the Tour de France, those are strong words.
The toughness, commitment and heart shown by these athletes inspire all who see them. Sponsored participants in Run For Our Sons events find corresponding inspiration in the courage and strength of the young men affected by Duchenne and the love and determination of their friends and families.
No matter which end of the equation you’re on, you’ll find that inspiration runs both ways.
HOW RUN FOR OUR SONS MAKES A DIFFERENCE Because distance events tend to attract athletes with a wide range of abilities, and take place over a large geographical area, they are particularly well suited to fundraising. More athletes and more area means more spectators; more spectators means more sponsorship opportunities, from families, friends, employers, and the community at large.
It’s about much more than money though. Fundraising events like Run For Our Sons raise overall awareness of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in the public consciousness, and that increased awareness helps to spur education and research, which may lead to advances in treatment and care for Duchenne patients.
