Live a good life, and in the end it is not the years in the life, but the life in the years...Abraham Lincoln.

While most of us would agree with this quote, it is not necessarily your family motto. However, this is the family motto for the Hester's, our dear friends, who are dealing with the realization that their precious 5 year old son, Micah, has been diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Team HAM...creating HOPE, raising AWARENESS, fundraising for a MIRACLE... will be participating in the Seattle Marathon to raise funds for this cause. Please support our goal to raise $50,000 with a donation by selecting the "Give Now" button on the left. Our efforts will help make a big difference!

Micah Hester
|
Why we are doing this?
Micah Hester has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, DMD, and is the reason we are fundraising for this cause. He will experience a loss in muscle function and independence as he struggles with this condition. DMD is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosis in young boys and will affect 1 out of 3,500 boys world wide. It knows no boundaries and crosses into all cultures and races. This condition primarily affects boys because the affected gene is found on the X chromosome.
Boys with DMD typically lose the ability to walk between ages 10-13, they lose upper body function in their teens, and sadly, most will lose the battle to DMD in their early 20's. Your support and donations will help to fund awareness for DMD, research for medications to improve the quality of life for patients, and hopefully someday, a cure! In fact, the leading researchers believe that with adequate funding, a cure could be as soon as two to three years away. It is a very exciting time to be part of supporting this cause.
Information about DMD was taken from the PPMD (Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy) website www.parentprojectmd.org

As many of you know, we have been trying to get Micah into a trial study for his DMD and getting our hopes up. Recently we found out that he does not have the right type of genetic make up for this study. This was very depressing news for our family. So, now more then ever we need to get more money for research which is what this is all about. Thank you all so much for your continued prayers and support. We love you all and what you are doing for our family!

Purdy Elementary had a take over of McDonalds tonight and as I was talking to one of my dear friends, her daughter came running up to her and said "mommy, mommy, I just saw Micah Hester...he is here" and she said to her daughter..."I know and this is his mommy" I never knew that Micah would become such a star in all of this. Boy, that warmed my heart. It was precious!

I just had to tell you all how excited I am with all of the progress going on with Micah. I know this is nothing that new but it is for our family. We recently went to spend Easter in Sun Valley at my dad's house and we got two lessons with an instructor with the (formerly known as)"Ski for All" and they had some great things. Micah even rode the chair lift quite a few times on the bi-ski. He loved it and wanted to do more and more. Our family loves to ski and Micah wants to be just like his big brother Brayden so this was a great step for us. This is the kind of things that money we raised pays for. So now lets raise somemore with PPMD to get a cure for this darn disease and Micah may be able to ski just like the rest of the family real soon! Thank you to everyone for helping make our dreams come true.

Wow, I saw this page in its final stage and tears welled up in my eyes. Thank you so much my dear family and friends both old and new for thinking of our little boy. It really makes my heart feel good to know that we are loved by so many. I hope that it is as easy for you to look into the eyes of Micah and fall in love with him as it is for us. He is the joy of our life and we feel he deserves the very best out of life that we can give him. Thank you again for everything--we appreciate you more then you will ever know!

First, we need to start by thanking PPMD and Seattle Marathon for allowing us to paricipate and to all our friends and family signing up for the team! Being able to fundraise for PPMD and do the Seattle Marathon is a first for both of these organizations, so let's be sure to make them proud to be working with our group!
Just email HAMforDMD@comcast.net to be added to our list!
